Photographic Safari - Kalizo Lodge

Welcome to Wildlife Photography by Albert Froneman and Chris van Rooyen illustrating the beauty and splendour of African birds and other wildlife. We invite you to participate in the advertised events! Once or twice a year, we lead photographic safaris to Kalizo Lodge.

Join Albert or Chris and three other photographers on this exciting excursion to photograph some spectacular and unique birds and other wildlife on the banks of the Zambezi River .

This event is suitable for both experienced as well as beginner photographers as there will be ample time for personal tuition on how to refine both your practical photographic technique and digital image processing.

Kalizo Lodge nestles cosily on the western bank of the Zambezi River in Caprivi. Zambia is just a stone's throw away on the opposite side of the river, albeit quite a throw, as the mighty river is an awesome sight to behold.

For the bird photographer, Kalizo is a place of endless opportunities, but above all it is a place to photograph bee-eaters and African Skimmers. It hosts a colony of Carmine Bee-eaters, reputed to be the biggest in southern Africa, with thousands of birds breeding along a 100m stretch of the Zambezi River. The colony is accessible by boat, and as long as the photographers stay sufficiently far away from the breeding birds, they can disembark from the boat as the birds are completely at ease and carry on with their daily activities.

The venue offers truly spectacular opportunities for both flight and portrait photography of these feathered jewels, and one an easily spend an entire morning at the colony. The opportunities for African Skimmers are no less exciting. This graceful bird has last bred in South Africa in 1943, and is regarded as locally extinct in South Africa. Not so at Kalizo - there are several pairs of the birds breeding on the white sand banks of the Zambezi, and they remain there all year round.

As with the bee-eaters, opportunities for both flight and portrait photography from the comfortable platform boat is spectacular. Kalizo is not only about bee-eaters and skimmers. The lodge area itself is teeming with birdlife, including Little Bee-eater, White-fronted Bee-eater, Tropical Boubou, White-crowned Lapwing, Hartlaub's Babbler and (if you are lucky) the rare Shelley's Sunbird. The river front also offers great opportunities for Pied Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, Little Egret, Green-backed Heron and African Fish Eagle.

There are two photographic safaris scheduled for 2007, in August and October. These tours fill up very quickly, as they are in great demand and numbers are limited.
